Woods, “The Hold,” Songs of Shame (Shrimper Records / Woodsist 2009)

I admit to liking skillfull lo-fi, and Woods has a pile of it. Skill, that is. Woods is one of a plethora of contemporary Brooklyn bands trying to distinguish themselves from one another. And frankly there is too much good music being made right now to keep up. Do what you can. Get a copy of Songs of Shame and check that one off the list. It will keep you happy for a while. It feels old and new simultaneously and moves from under 3-minute telescopic tunes like this to psych mind benders just shy of the ten-minute mark. This is a haunting and captivating collection.
