Steve Gunn, “Jadin’s Dream,” Boerum Palace (Three Lobed, November 2009)
Gunn has justifiably started to get more attention, and more attention he deserves, especially in the wake of his Three Lobed release, Boerum Palace. A native Philadelphian, Gunn has worked as half of GHQ and has collaborated with other experimental artists such as Tom Carter, The Magik Markers and Marc Orleans. This is his second full-length solo release, and his first solo vinyl release (a download coupon accompanies the LP ).
Throughout Boerum Palace are blues, raga, psych, folk influences, put inside Gunn’s cauldron and churned into his own brand of sound. Guests include Marc Orleans (of D. Charles Speer & The Helix and Sunburned Hand of the Man) on blistering pedal steel, and Vanishing Voice’s Heidi Diehl. It is clear by now that anything and everything that comes out on Three Lobed will be excellent. And Gunn is not only another example of that, but a shining one.
