“Where We’ll Never Grow Old”
Alfred Karnes was one of the most original and vital of the 1920s gospel singers. Yazoo Records has released four of Karnes’s songs on their Music of Kentucky Vol. 1 compilation, which also includes the excellent work of B.F. Shelton. All of his work is available in one place of Document CD, Kentucky Gospel 1927-1928 (DOCD 8013).
Karnes was recorded in Bristol, Tennessee in 1927 and 1928, having traveled there from his home in Corbin, Kentucky. He recorded 12 sides, of which only 7 were released. His guitar playing is snappy and rhythmic, somewhat in the style of Rabbit Brown. “We Shall Be United” is another powerful song, later covered by Doc Watson on his Doc Watson and Son album.
The Document CD includes 8 tracks by Karnes:
01 - Called to the foreign field
02 - I am bound for the promised land
03 - Where we`ll never grow old
04 - When they ring the golden bells
05 - To the work
06 - Do not wait `till I`m laid `neath the clay
07 - The days of my childhood plays
08 - We shall all be reunited
