Terje Rypdal, “Autumn Breeze,” After the Rain (ECM, 1976).

This Norwegian guitarist is a master of atmosphere. He is sometimes labelled as “prog,” the negative connotations of this label a bit unfair I think. This was one of the first pure guitar records I ever bought as a teenager, at the now deceased Peacock Records in Plattsburgh, NY. It was in the bargain bin, with a remainder slit cut in the upper right corner (we are talking LPs here, no CDs on the horizon at this date). I loved the atmospheric cover and the man’s name. That is all I had to go on. I made a good choice and have bought his records to this day. This is the lead track off of “After the Rain,” one of his best records from start to finish.
