Rev. Gary Davis, “I’ll Fly Away”

This song is now well known via the Allison Krauss/Gillian Welch version on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Rev. Gary Davis (1896-1972) sings and plays a mean version, with fantastic guitar accompaniment. Among the most innovative and influential of the early recorded guitarists, he has been called the “most fantastic guitarist I’d ever seen” by Dave Van Ronk. Taj Mahal said: “Gary Davis took you out of playing baby guitar and made you play it like a grown man.”
