Mark McGuire, “Second Thoughts,” Solo Acoustic Vol 2 (VDSQ)
The guitarist for Cleveland’s Emeralds, Mark McGuire might perhaps be better known for his intricate sound sculpting in that band, riding through the sea of synths churned by John Elliott and Steve Hauschildt. On his solo record, released on Vin Du Select Qualitite‘s Solo Acoustic series last year, McGuire is front and center, revealing a command of the instrument that crosses traditions (established and those still being invented). McGuire says in his notes on this piece: “Was recorded live and in standard tuning. This is the most improvised piece of the record, the chords bouncing off of each other freely without a binding rhythm. I recorded this one after coming home from work early on a Saturday morning, during one of the first snowfalls of the year.”
The interstices of this piece master your ears and mind, and soul beyond. It is okay to find something beautiful. This is it.
