Fleet Foxes, “Isles” (2008).

Fleet Foxes are a long-time favorite here. This b-side to “White Winter Hymnal” shows Robin Pecknold at his most elemental. With just his voice, guitar and a healthy dose of reverb, “Isles” proves a perfect counterpoint to the baroque layerings of “White Winter Hymnal.”

In a year of great albums, Fleet Foxes’s full-length debut and follow-up EP Sun Giant stood out as the best. They were perfect comfort food through the tumult of the election and the crumbling of the economy. Both releases somehow seem to eerily echo virtually everything you’ve ever heard before and so sound totally familiar and welcoming, and totally new and rejuvenating.
