Max Richter, “This Picture of Us. P.,” 24 Postcards in Full Colour (Fat Cat 2008)

One of the most consistently gorgeous records I’ve heard in a long time, 24 Postcards in Full Colour is an experience that must be taken in whole. So to pick just one track here limits the record, but you’ll get the idea. It is varied, and lush. The German-born Richter conceived these 24 pieces as ringtones for phones. No joke. The longest is 2:51 and the shortest a mere 36 seconds. Get one of these in your phone to combat the creep with “Smoke on the Water” a few seats down on the bus.

Richter has imagined a live performance of these with the phones of audience members controlled by text message. Count me in.
