Mountains, “Telescope,” Choral (Thrill Jockey, 2009)

Mountains is Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp, friends since middle school. On this, their third album, they continue to blend electronic and acoustic instruments to astonishing effect. This track in particular shows them opening with the very organic rhythmic and melodic line of the acoustic guitar that gradually blurs and the devolves into the electronic noise that overtakes it. They hail from Chicago, but live in Brooklyn now. They recorded this album at home over the course of last winter and spring, performing and recording the songs live with only a few overdubs.
