Susan Alcorn, “People Get Ready,” Curandera
Susan Alcorn tranforms the pedal steel into a haunting and inspired experience. I learned of her through Dan Bodah’s excellent Airborne Event show on WFMU (Sunday mornings, 6 to 9am). Hailing from Texas and now living in Baltimore, Alcorn takes this instrument away from its traditional country idiom and transcribes jazz, classical and pop songs, such as this Curtis Mayfield classic. The result transcends any and all expectations. Tracking down her work can be difficult, but the Downtown Music Gallery has most of it available.
