Greek Theatre

I think I may have found the music that I have been hearing in my head for the last twenty-five years and have not been able to hear in the real world. Greek Theatre, from Sweden. It is this type of connection that makes the internet the miracle it is. I have spent the last hour listening to this astonishing band, whose range of influences and interests shows breadth and quality, and I am left happy. And that is what this crazy pursuit of sound should be about. Theirs is a compositional attitude I would describe as additive: subtle building of layers and sounds that construct a song, brick by brick. Yes, these are solid things. And then, suddenly, as in the case of “Now is the Time,” when all else recedes and we are left only with a glorious reverberated horn, the layers are stripped. And you will want to start listening all over again.

I should add that it is beautifully recorded too— gorgeous sounds and a singer of intimate clarity and care.

This may not be the first you’ve heard of Greek Theatre, and I am confident it will not be the last. I certainly hope so. Head to hear them at MySpace. You’ll be reading more about them here.
